The two Koreas have technically remained at war for decades, although a post-World War II armistice has kept an uneasy peace along a heavily fortified border. It has also for the most part kept the two populations separated.

Lee, 17, is competing in her first Olympics, according to CNN.

Hong is a veteran gymnast who won her country's first ever gymnastics medal at the 2008 Beijing Games, taking home the gold in the vault event.

Muhammad is fencing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, which makes her the first American athlete in history to compete in hijab.

Muhammad made headlines earlier this year when she became the first American athlete to qualify for the games in any sport while competing in hijab, a traditional headscarf worn by some Muslim women.

Not only does Muhammad add significant diversity to Team USA, she also helps to represent the Muslim community all over the United States. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people of 2016.

ICYMI, Australian swimmer Mack Horton is currently public enemy number one in China for his tense public feud with Chinese nemesis Sun Yang.

Horton won the 400m freestyle at the Olympics on day one of competition, saying it was a win for the "good guys", which was a not-too-subtle nod to the fact that Yang has previously been suspended from the sport for taking a banned substance.

The 20-year-old Aussie also said Yang splashed water in his face during a warm-up session last week, and then the world's most awkward handshake occurred on the medal dais (see above).
